Restoration of Historic Cemetery Markers Begins!
In 2018, the Cemetery Department hired an independent stone conservator to begin restoration of burial markers at City-owned cemeteries. During the summer and fall, the conservator leveled, cleaned and repaired delicate marble and slate markers at Broad Street Cemetery, Greenlawn Cemetery and the Friends Burial Ground. Her work also supported the exciting return of an early slate headstone to Salem. The headstone, which was found in a garage in Scituate, MA, was originally located in Charter Street Cemetery where it marked the graves of unnamed infant children of Mary and William Bowditch, who lived in Salem in the late 1600s and early 1700s.
